Delhi HC Issues Urgent Guidelines on AI Deepfakes Ahead of Polls

In a suo motu cognizance case, the Delhi High Court established strict interim guidelines to combat the weaponization of generative AI in political campaigns. The bench noted that traditional 24-hour grievance mechanisms are insufficient given the viral nature of synthetic media.
Social media intermediaries are now required to deploy automated hashing tools to prevent the re-upload of flagged deepfakes, under threat of losing their safe harbour immunity under Section 79 of the IT Act.
