Deterring Frivolous and Politically Motivated PILs
The Karnataka High Court took a harsh stance against the misuse of Public Interest Litigation (PIL) by slapping a ₹1 lakh fine on the petitioners. The PIL alleged that State Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa had made public statements intending to change the status of Hindi as a third language in the SSLC examinations.
Upon reviewing the evidence, the High Court categorically stated that the Minister had not made any such policy-altering statements regarding the Hindi language. The Bench dismissed the petition as speculative and imposed exemplary costs to deter the filing of court cases based on unverified political rumors.
