'FSSAI is There': Supreme Court Dismisses PIL Seeking Court-Monitored Food Safety Committee

By Regulatory Desk|10 April 2026

Reliance on Statutory Regulators

The Supreme Court of India has refused to intervene in the daily regulatory mechanics of national food safety. The bench dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that requested the creation of a special court-monitored committee to enforce food quality and hygiene standards across the country.

The apex court succinctly noted, 'FSSAI is there', highlighting that the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India is a specialized statutory body fully empowered to handle these issues. The Court reiterated its stance against running parallel administrative mechanisms when dedicated regulatory authorities exist.
